Achieved over three years compared to alternative enterprise storage solutions

Multi-Petabyte Scalability

Future-proofed infrastructure capable of handling 500TB+ annual data growth

Enterprise-Grade Security & Compliance

Highest Microsoft Secure Score with ISO 27001 and CIS benchmark validation

Challenge

Murphy Geospatial operates with 300+ engineers across five countries, generating extremely large geospatial data sets up to 1.2TB per day, from construction sites, field teams, offices and remote workers.

As the business scaled, its storage and collaboration infrastructure began to break down.

Key challenges included:

  • Constantly running out of physical storage

  • Standard file servers, site-to-site VPNs and client VPNs pushed beyond their limits

  • SAN storage, backup and disaster recovery systems becoming prohibitively expensive

  • File size and type limitations ruling out OneDrive, SharePoint and Azure Files

  • Need to scale beyond a petabyte within three years

  • ISO 27001:2013 and CIS benchmarking compliance requirements

  • Urgent implementation required due to exhausted physical storage capacity

Storage constraints were directly impacting growth and limiting the company’s ability to take on larger contracts.

Solution

CTERA Enterprise File Services Platform deployed and fully managed by Savenet

Savenet designed and implemented a cloud-synchronised global file system combining:

  • CTERA Enterprise File Services Platform deployed in Microsoft Azure

  • Wasabi Cloud Storage for scalable, cost-effective cloud storage

  • Seven CTERA virtual cloud caching gateway appliances (16TB–128TB) across key offices

  • CTERA Edge Filers for office-level intelligent caching

  • CTERA Agents deployed to all 300+ engineers’ laptops

Key Solution Features
  • Over 300TB of data migrated into the CTERA global file system

  • Intelligent local caching, only active data stored locally, inactive data stubbed

  • Seamless access to full dataset from any office or laptop

  • Snapshot backups every 5 minutes

  • Built to ISO 27001 and CIS benchmarking standards

  • FIPS 140-2 certified encryption

  • Data compression and deduplication reducing storage footprint by up to 50%

  • Fully managed service delivered by Savenet

The solution eliminated storage bottlenecks while enabling secure, real-time collaboration across multiple countries.

Results

The impact was immediate and transformational:

  • Storage pressure and constraints completely removed within 8 weeks

  • 50% cost savings over three years compared to competitors

  • Achieved Microsoft’s highest available Secure Score

  • ISO 27001:2013 and CIS benchmark compliance fully audited and board-approved

  • Multi-petabyte scalability to support accelerated growth

  • Enabled Murphy Geospatial to confidently take on a new contract generating an additional 100TB of data

What would previously have required board-level risk escalation became a non-issue due to the scalability of the new platform.

“Within 8 weeks, the bulk of the project was delivered and our storage pressures and constraints had disappeared. We have recently won a large contract with a large global online retail company that will generate an additional 100TB of data above our normal annual data growth of 300 TB this year. Being faced with the prospect of having to deal with a half a petabyte of data growth in one year would have been a major issue that would have gone to board level, but now we don’t give it a second thought as the CTERA solution that Savenet have designed has multipetabyte capacity.”
